Thirty-three different times in the Gospels, the words “but Jesus” appear on the page. The crowd was doing one thing, but Jesus did something else. The people were expecting Jesus to do one thing, but Jesus did something else. The disciples were expecting Jesus to say one thing, but Jesus said something else. Every time one of these stories says “but Jesus,” the “but” always changed the outcome.
